Case Studies

Here are some case studies of my recent students. These are all real life case studies of students that I have assisted.

David

Comprehensive School in Milton Keynes

Exam Resit

David, a second year undergraduate at a well known and prestigious business school in Germany had passed all her end of year exams – apart from the Entrepreneurship, Strategy & Innovation module. When she approached me, the stakes were high, as she was not allowed to progress to the next year unless she passed the module in a resit.

Over a period of three intense weeks during the summer, I planned a detailed study schedule which covered all the course material and executed this. Two hour lessons were scheduled every other day. The sessions were very interactive with lots of Q&A, ensuring a much deeper understanding of the subject matter. The tutoring sessions included exam question practice, with detailed feedback provided. Exam technique and answer structure were also provided throughout.

After a nervous wait, Stephanie received news that she passed the exam resit and was able to proceed to the next year of her university studies.

Derek

International School in Warsaw

Tutoring

Derek approached me as he was just starting a two year International Baccalaureate (HL) course and was seeking help for both Economics and Business Management. Derek found that the pace of the lessons at school were very fast and the teacher did not always explain things properly and tended to dart around the syllabus, which made it difficult to keep up with the learning requirements.

The first thing I did was plan a tutoring timetable for Derek detailing each subject of the course that needed to be covered throughout the term. Appropriate course materials were selected (including the key course textbook), together with past exam papers, mock exam papers and practice questions. I then set about diligently and thoroughly working through the course material and each learning outcome, combined with regular question practice to test and confirm understanding of the material. Derek is investing three hours per week in tutoring, but finding that a regular and consistent approach is really helping. It is important for Derek to do well in his IB exams as he is planning to attend a top university in Europe to study Business at degree level.

The tutoring remains ongoing, but Derek is doing well in class and feels much more confident about his studies as he approaches the end of term exams.

Paul

Business School in Australia

Dissertation Assistance

Paul re-entered education almost 20 years after graduating from a bachelors degree. He had worked in sales and business development roles in the software industry for a number of years, but decided that it was time to go back to Business School and undertake an Executive MBA. Following an executive programme meant that he could continue working, whilst studying at the same time. Balancing work and study was particularly challenging, and this was heightened by the fact that he had spent a number of years out of the educational system, so felt a bit ‘rusty’ – especially when it came to academic writing tasks. Paul’s academic confidence was low and he needed someone to help and guide him throughout this period.

I helped Paul with his approach the dissertation. This included understanding how to conduct a literature review, how to formulate a research question, how to choose an appropriate research methodology, conduct the research, analyse and write up the results. Learning how to adopt a ‘scientific’ mind and approach to the dissertation was extremely beneficial for Paul. The dissertation was 12,000 words, so a disciplined approach to the research and writing was required.

Paul scored highly in the dissertation, receiving a grade above 70%. He was very pleased with the research he had conducted, and his research findings confirmed his initial hypothesis. He is now using the dissertation as the seed for a new business idea he has and is looking to grow this when he graduates from the MBA programme.

Christina

MA in Marketing Candidate, USA

University Admissions

Christina had an undergraduate in Management from a US university and was looking to specialise in Marketing as she was seeking a career in the Creative or Advertising industries. Having researched several masters programmes for Marketing in the UK, she selected one university in London which offered her exactly what she was looking for.

Unfamiliar with the UK university admissions process, she contact me to get some help regarding her application for the course. The university was highly regarded, especially in the field of Marketing Management, and as such, attracted applications from highly qualified prospective students.

I helped Christina with the application, including working closely with her written personal statement, where she was required to explain her motivations for applying to the programme and why she would make a good student if accepted onto the programme. The personal statement had a strict word limit, so it was important that it was highly impactful and effective.
